About the WCRP Open Science Conference

World Climate Research Program Open Science Conference

October 24-28, 2011

Denver, Colorado

At about 1600 attendees this was by far the largest meeting or conference that JOSS has handled.  With 5 US agencies providing major funding as well as contributions from European and private companies, managing the funding while accommodating each agency's particular spending regulation became a creative exercise. World Climate Research Program was our partner in this effort and it was definitely an international collaboration.

JOSS, under the direction of the US CLIVAR Office (managed by JOSS), handled the financing, the logistical planning, and on site staffing for the event.   JOSS also ran the registration, did the graphic design for the on site event signage,  contracted the hotels, ran the sponsorship program, and managed the exhibitor booths.

Several attendees told me that it was the best organized science conference they had been to in the last year.   People appreciated that it was large enough to attract a broad audience and yet intimate enough to be conducive to networking and fun.

A full monograph of the event is being published and will be distributed to all attendees.
